The
Process:
Although
the basic elements of the freeze-dry process have been known
for over 50 years, it was not until World War II that emphasis
was placed on refining the process. By the end of the war,
freeze-drying had become a near perfect method of refrigeration.
The
freeze-drying process includes several basic steps and requirements.
-
A specimen must be completely frozen throughout before the
drying process can begin.
- After
this has occurred, a vacuum pump removes the atmosphere.
- Water
is then removed from the specimen and collected in the ice
bank.
- Throughout
the drying process, the temperature of the specimen will
be gradually increased.
- When
all of the moisture has been removed (which can take several
days) and the specimen is at or near room temperature, the
freeze-drying process is complete.
